INTERVIEW: Great Minnesota Pet Together

The Great Minnesota Pet Together kicks off tomorrow with 25 animal welfare and rescue groups from around the state holding a one-day pet adoption event.

KSTP talked to Marilou Chanrasmi, president of Minnesota Partnership for Animal Welfare, about the numbers of furry friends available for adoption at the event this weekend.

The animal welfare organizations will be there with a lot of dog and cat options, but it is a concern that these animals find homes, Chanrasmi said.

In 2011, the Animal Humane Society took in 21,000 animal,, and of those animals, 54 percent were felines, 34 percent were canines and eight percent were other types of animals.

The coalition is willing to try to match the animal with the right life-style of the family willing to adopt.

Last year the event drew 1,300 people, and they adopted out over 100 animals to homes.

The event takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Oct. 6, in the International Bazaar at the State Fairgrounds.
