INTERVIEW: National Guard Talks Wildfire Progress
A wildfire forced up to 400 people out of their homes in Karlstad, Minn. yesterday.
In all, the town has a population of 750, and the fire was one of eight fires burning in the north.
KSTP got to talk to Maj. Michael Barker, of the National Guard, about an update on the fire via phone.
Right now, they have all the aircraft crews ready to go out and assist the DNR in the fire effort, Barker said.
The people had just a few minutes to grab their belongings and leave when they were told to evacuate the town Oct. 2.
The National Guard has three flight crews up north, two Blackhawk crews and a Chinook crew. They arrive in the morning, get the aircraft ready, pre-flighted, and they hook up the buckets. As soon as they get the word, they launch.
