Study: Kids Exposed to Too Much Background TV Noise

A new study finds that kids are exposed to background television noise three times as much as just watching TV.

Researchers at the University of North Carolina Wilmington found the average child aged eight months to eight years hears nearly four hours of background TV a day. Kids typically watch 80 minutes a day.

One doctor says it’s best to limit kids’ exposure to media.

“Zero to 2 year olds should have zero TV and screen time,” says Dr. Ellen Rome of Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital. “After age 2 it should be no more than 1 or 2 hours a day of total screen time. That counts media, video game, computer, and TV. And that means no more than 14 hours a week."

The study says too much background TV leads to lower cognitive performance and inattention during playtime.
