INTERVIEW: Tornado Alley

People can go on a storm-chasing expedition through the tornado capital of the world at the Science Museum of Minnesota today.

Storm Casing Expert Sean Casey talked to KSTP Meteorologist Patrick Hammer about the storm chaser vehicle that will be at the museum and the film they used it in.

To do a tornado IMAX film, they needed footage up close, Casey said. In order to do that, Casey’s team built a 15,000 lb vehicle so that they could be in the path of the storm.

Inside the vehicle, there is a meteorologist who can forecast and outcast to help the team choose which storm they want to chase. Casey said his team tries to chase front of the storm, so when the storm produces a tornado they can cut the distance and close.

The second mission of the vehicle is to see what kind of winds happen in front of the tornadoes, Casey said. They then hand over the data to scientists to figure out what happens on the ground when the storm occurs.
