Hurricane Miriam Weakening in Pacific Off Mexico

Hurricane Miriam is gradually weakening well off Mexico's Baja California peninsula.

Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami said late Tuesday that Miriam is packing top sustained winds near 80 mph (129 kph), down from 105 mph earlier in the day. At 11 p.m. EDT Tuesday, the hurricane is centered about 430 miles (692 kilometers) southwest of the southern tip of the Baja peninsula.

Miriam is moving northwest at 5 mph (8 kph). No coastal watches or warnings are in effect, but ocean swells will impact Baja's southern and western shore over the coming days.

In the open Atlantic, Tropical Storm Nadine has turned to the south-southwest but remains far from land. It is 510 miles (821 kilometers) south-southwest of the Azores islands with top sustained winds of about 45 mph (75 kph).
