Education Commissioner Greets Students on First Day of School

Summer vacation is officially over for Minnesota students. Thousands of kids went back to the classroom Tuesday to start a new school year.

State Education Commissioner Brenda Cassellius greeted students as they got off the bus at Sheridan Hills Elementary School in Richfield Tuesday morning.

Cassellius says Minnesota schools are making great progress in improving student performance, but there are areas where both teachers and students can improve. She says she is meeting with teachers who are implementing creative and innovative methods of helping students achieve academic success in the classroom, then sharing those methods with other districts around Minnesota.

The state is using a new system to determine which districts are doing well at closing the achievement gap and which ones need extra help.
