SLIDESHOW: Firefighters Working Blaze Near Ely

Firefighters attacked a wildfire burning in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness by air while ground crews built containment lines northwest of Ely.

The fire is burning on a peninsula separating the west side of Cummings Lake from the northeast side of Otter Lake. Superior National Forest spokeswoman Becca Manlove says the wildfire has burned more than 30 acres in a lowland area. No structures are threatened by the fire.

Firefighters on the ground completed a control line on the eastern border of the fire Monday while a helicopter worked the blaze from above.

The Duluth News Tribune says the cause of the fire, which was first reported Sunday, is not known.
