Report Shows Millions of Decks in US May Not Be Safe

Millions of families are likely spending a little relaxation time this holiday weekend outside on their decks, but numbers from ABC News show many decks aren’t as safe as we think, and some are in jeopardy of collapsing.
About 40 million decks are more than 20 years old in the United States, according to the report. Experts say that’s when decks can start to rot and then give way.
They recommend checking for cracked and rotted wood in addition to weak connections like nails. Make sure the deck is bolted straight into the base of the house, and get it inspected if it’s more than 15 years old.
