Ex-St. Paul Police Chief to Lead Transit Police

Former St. Paul police chief John Harrington will lead the Metro Transit police department.

The Metropolitan Council selected Harrington on Monday from among three finalists.

The 56-year-old stepped down as St. Paul police chief in June 2010, after six years at the helm and more than 30 years in the department. He was elected to the Minnesota Senate that fall but decided not to seek another term this year.

Harrington tells the St. Paul Pioneer Press he's looking forward to returning to law enforcement.

He begins his new job Tuesday next week and says he'll step down as senator. His St. Paul seat will be vacant until the November election.

Harrington's predecessor at Metro Transit retired in January. The transit police department has 69 full-time and 55 part-time officers.
