U of M Experiment Joins NASA Mission

An experiment from the University of Minnesota will be on board NASA’s Radiation Belt Storm Probes mission.

The mission will look at the forces that govern radiation in the Van Allen Radiation Belts, a region of space that poses radiation danger to astronauts and spacecraft.

Scientists will be looking at how the particles become energized, which will help them design spacecraft that can withstand the radiation.

Twin spacecrafts will be sent into orbit through the Van Allen Belts.  According to the university, it’s the first time two spacecraft have explored the region.

The U of M’s Electric Field and Waves Suite will help study the sizes, intensities, and durations of electric fields in the belts.

The mission launches this Friday.
