The Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa has completed its work to recover a limited number of decades-old barrels from Lake Superior near Duluth.
The U.S. Army disposed of hundreds of barrels in the lake between 1959 and 1962. The barrels came from a Twin Cities Army ammunition plant and are believed to contain munitions parts and general production line debris.
The Red Cliff worked with EMR of Duluth to recover randomly selected barrels. Plans called for 70 barrels to be removed. The first lab data from the barrels is expected within a few weeks. But, WDIO-TV reports it could take several months to determine if the barrels pose a risk to human health or the environment.
