Mankato City Council Votes to Oppose Marriage Amendment

Mankato city leaders have voted to oppose an amendment to the state constitution banning marriage by people of the same gender.

The 4-1 vote by the City Council Monday came despite opposition from those who felt the council shouldn't be involved in the issue. Dan Wagner told council members the amendment should be decided by the voters and that the council should deal with streets, sewers, parks and property taxes.

The Free Press reports council member Tamra Rovney said it was important to take a stand and let people know Mankato is an "open and accepting" city.

The constitutional amendment defining marriage as between one man and one woman will be on Minnesota's Nov. 6 ballot.

According to a KSTP poll taken last month, 52 percent supported the amendment and 37 percent were against it.
