Much to Celebrate as Mall of America Turns 20 Years Old
As the Mall of America marks its 20th anniversary, there's much to celebrate.
The mall makes money, and a lot of it, for the state. Forty-two million people bring their wallets there every year, generating $66 million in tax revenue. Plus, 13,000 people are employed there. 1 out of 9 jobs in Bloomington are at the mall.
In the past 5 years, another 110 stores have been added bringing the total number of stores to 520 today. And there's more to come. Phase two of the mall expansion is underway. When completed, two hotels, a water park and medical clinic will be part of the complex. It's expected these additions will double the mall's impact on the state economy to $4.3 billion.
