The golden-winged warbler is a striking find for Minnesota birders, but disappearing habitat has federal authorities considering it for threatened or endangered status.
Help might be on the way for the warbler, though, as one of 32 proposals still in the running for a share of almost $100 million in Legacy Amendment money, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
Those were survivors of the first cut by the Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Council.
The American Bird Conservancy is seeking $4.8 million to identify and protect breeding areas for the golden-winged warbler in Minnesota. Steve Hobbs, Minnesota project director for The Conservancy Fund, says species like American woodcock and ruffed grouse would benefit too.
The council is expected to make final recommendations to the Legislature late next month.
