A tribe in far northern Wisconsin is preparing to open 89 acres of tribal land to the public.
The Red Cliff Chippewa plan to unveil Frog Bay Tribal National Park on Friday. The move will mark the first time that a national park that's tribally owned or controlled has opened to the public.
Frog Bay is about 15 minutes north of Bayfield, home of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. The area is flush with towering trees, including pine, spruce and cedar.
Visitors will be able to hear the songs of nearly 90 species of birds. Other wildlife includes bobcats, beaver, bears, deer and wolves.
To minimize trail damage, parking will be limited. People who want to visit the one-quarter-mile stretch of sand beach will have to walk.
