Program Helping Teens Bolster Driving Skills
Teenage drivers got a chance to improve their skills behind the wheel Saturday.
Tire Rack Street Survival, a nonprofit teen driving education program, set up a driving course at Dakota County Technical College. The program combines a short classroo
m session with behind the wheel training to help young drivers learn how to manage everyday driving hazards, obstacles and challenges.
Participants train in their own cars, learning everything from braking and skid control, to controlling unintended oversteer and understeer.
Teens who took the course Saturday said they were a little scared at first, but were pleased with how the instructors helped them through the difficult parts.
Organizers say more than 5,000 youth ages 15 to 20 are involved in fatal motor vehicle crashes each year.
