Joe Mauer Helps Restore Baseball Field in St. Paul
A St. Paul youth baseball field has a new look thanks to help from Twins catcher Joe Mauer and his mom, Teresa.
The Mauers worked with volunteers and St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman to restore Edgcume field Friday morning, as part of a new program to restore youth baseball fields in the state.
Mauer and Coleman installed new bases and painted new baselines, while volunteers raked the new pitchers mound. New flowers were planted and eventually, new dugouts and benches will be in place.
Mauer played at Edgcumbe when he was growing up.
"To come back and be able to give back to places that I've played at and see the improvements, it's just a nice safe place to be a kid," Mauer said.
Mauer also hosted a catching and hitting clinic at the park.
The project is funded through proceeds from Kemps ice cream products. 10 cents from every Joe Mauer milk and ice cream product sold up to $100,000 through Sept. 30, 212 will be donated to the Local Heroes for Local Fields program.
Fields in Duluth, Rochester and St. Cloud are also being considered for restoration.
