Minneapolis Council Sets New Green Standards for Events
Organizers of some events in Minneapolis will have yet another step to take to get approval from the city. The City Council voted Friday to enact a new ordinance requiring recycling.
"Folks in Minneapolis want to recycle, and I find they're very surprised when they go to an event and find they can't," said Council Member Betsy Hodges.
The new ordinance takes effect January 1, 2013. It requires that organizers of any event drawing more than 2,500 people have a written plan to collect and recycle paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, and metal containers.
"This change will put events in line with what our own residents do, and it will ultimately reduce the amount of waste we produce," said Hodges.
A city spokesperson acknowledged some event organizers have set up systems to collect recyclers in the past.
"Also, most of the same vendors that offer solid waste services at events are offering recycling services as well," said the spokesperson.
