Western Wis. Woman Drowns Near Minn. Border

A western Wisconsin woman drowned Wednesday evening after reportedly leaving a sand bar near the Minnesota-Wisconsin border.

Authorities were called to an area north of Buffalo City around 6:50 p.m. on a report of a woman who had not resurfaced after going under in an area of deep water.

Witnesses say the woman, identified as 35-year-old Tammy Lorenz of Buffalo City, was on a sand bar in the area of Belvidere landing when she either went off of a steep ledge or was swept under by currents.

Rescue personnel began a search, and the woman's body was recovered around 8:30 p.m. approximately 150 yards downstream from where she was last seen.

The Buffalo County Sheriff's Office says Lorenz was not wearing a life vest.

Buffalo City is located in southwestern Wisconsin, northwest of Winona, Minn.
