EmailWisconsin Mink Production up 19 Percent Last Year
Wisconsin continues to lead the nation in the production of mink pelts, accounting for one in three U.S. pelts last year.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture says Wisconsin produced 1.1 million mink pelts last year. That was up 19 percent from the previous year.
That was well above Utah, which was second in the U.S. with just under 700,000 pelts.
Two-thirds of Wisconsin's mink pelts were black. Another 13 percent were blue iris; 11 percent were mahogany; and white and sapphire accounted for 4 percent each.
National production increased 9 percent last year to 3.1 million pelts. The pelts were worth $292 million, a 25 percent increase from 2010.
