Minn. Leaders Eye Late August Flood Relief Session

Minnesota lawmakers expect to convene a special session in late August to approve state relief for natural disasters, mainly for northeastern communities but also for deluged towns nearer to the Twin Cities.

Gov. Mark Dayton and top legislators said Wednesday they would set a formal date once they get a fuller accounting of damage from heavy rains and winds earlier this summer.

A presidential disaster declaration means the three-quarters of repair costs for public infrastructure will be covered by federal money. Dayton and lawmakers say they anticipate the state paying the remaining 25 percent.

Republican House Speaker Kurt Zellers says leaders will ensure the session is limited to disasters assistance and broadening the scope would be a "disservice to those people that have had their lives completely disrupted."
