Winona Mayor Wants New Bridge over Mississippi

The Minnesota Department of Transportation is making plans to improve the Mississippi River bridge in Winona. But, the mayor says that's not good enough.

Mayor Jerry Miller says the community also needs a new bridge. Rehabilitating the bridge became more critical when gusset plates that attach the main beam to the piers were found deficient several years ago. The faulty gusset plates were found in the wake of the collapse of the Interstate 35 bridge in Minneapolis.

MnDOT has been looking exclusively at ways to improve the bridge because of its historic nature. In a letter to 1st District Rep. Tim Walz, Miller has asked for a meeting to talk about the bridge.

The Post-Bulletin reports Miller wants the current bridge rehabilitated and another one built next to it to serve future transportation needs.
