License Plate Reader in West Fargo IDs Stolen Car
West Fargo police have recovered a stolen car using a vehicle-mounted camera that automatically scans license plates.
The Forum reports that the camera scans plates as cars pass by and checks them against a National Crime Information Center database of stolen vehicles.
Assistant West Fargo Police Chief Mike Reitan says the 2012 Dodge Avenger had been reported stolen in May from a car rental agency at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.
When the car passed by a West Fargo police car equipped with an automated license plate reader Tuesday morning, it alerted officers that the plate had been entered into the database. Officers stopped the car and arrested the driver.
Police in Fargo and West Fargo and the Cass County Sheriff's Office use the plate readers.
