Wis. DNR Proposes State Forest Upgrades

The state Department of Natural Resources is proposing a number of upgrades for Governor Knowles State Forest in far northwestern Wisconsin.

A draft master plan for the forest calls for improving and lengthening the forest's trails, improving an existing 32-mile snowmobile trail, a new group equestrian campground and adding electricity and showers to existing campgrounds.

The plan is available on the DNR's website. The agency has scheduled an open house on the plan for Monday in Grantsburg and will accept written comments through July 13.

The forest, named for former Wisconsin Gov. Warren P. Knowles, is located in Burnett and Polk counties. Much of it lies along the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway.
