New Breast Cancer Treatment Designed to Attack Cancer Cells Directly
The fight against cancer is breaking out the big guns. New research shows a sharp escalation in high-tech approaches to cancer treatments.
One includes a so-called 'smart' drug that delivers powerful poisons directly to cancer cells while leaving healthy cells alone.
"It is really like a heat seeking missile with a toxic payload. It travels all over the body until it reaches the cancer cell and then lets off a massive toxic dose to kill off the cancer without damaging the rest of the body," says Dr. Jennifer Ashton, a women's health expert.
There's also a new tool to help the immune system attack a broad range of cancer types, but that drug is only in the early research stages. More testing is needed to make sure it's safe.
