'E-Emergency' Rooms at Forefront of 21st Century Hospital Care

Nearly a dozen hospitals in Minnesota are now using "E-Emergency" services in their emergency rooms.

It's essentially emergency room treatment done via the internet and two-way video hook-ups.

The service is offered by Avera Health of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.  They're providing "ECare" services in more than 50 hospitals in six Midwestern states.  The goal is to help patients survive, small hospitals thrive and help reduce unnecessary emergency transport to bigger hospitals which can be very expensive.

In two years of offering "E-Emergency," Avera estimates they've eliminated $3.3 million in helicopter and ambulance transports by keeping patients in their local hospitals whenever possible.
