Doctors Protest HMO Profits At Taxpayers' Expense

Health care professionals are demanding the H-M-Os return 2.5-billion dollars in profits they've made running the state's public health care programs. Medica, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, HealthPartners and U-Care, collectively, have those reserves sitting in their bank accounts. Pharmacist, Joel Albers, is organizing the protest and he told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS that it is immoral for the H-M-Os to make large profits and keep them when the state is considering cutting health care to the poor and disabled. The Minnesota Council of Health Plans is the lobbying arm of the HMOs. They issued a statement in previous months saying they already are audited and are working toward more transparency with the Legislature and Governor Dayton.
