U-Care issued a statement saying they made the donation to help the state erase its 5-billion dollar budget deficit. State Senator John Marty, (DFL) Roseville, told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS he's happy U-Care gave the money back to the state, but he questioned the HMOs motives. Seven HMOs deliver the state's public health programs. Each year, the HMOs receive 3-billion dollars of your tax money to administer those programs like Medicaid and MinnCare. But, Senator Marty says there is no state audit of those funds, and he worries U-Care made the donation to discourage the legislature from requiring a state audit of their books.

In a written statement, Governor Mark Dayton, expressed gratitude for the U-Care donation. And, Dayton also said he hopes the other six HMOs in the public health program, follow U-Care's lead and donate any reserve money they have as well.
