Wis. Bill Would Waive License for Home Canners
MADISON, Wis. (AP) - People who sell less than $5,000 a year worth of food they can at home would not have to get licensed by the state under a bill before the state Assembly.
Current Wisconsin law requires facilities where food is canned, frozen or bottled for sale to obtain a license. The bill before the state Assembly on Tuesday provides an exemption for those who prepare and can fruits and vegetables at home for sale at farmers markets or other community or social events.
They would have to sell no more than $5,000 a year to get the exception.
No one was registered in opposition to the measure.
The proposal was sponsored by Rep. Gary Sherman, a Democrat from Port Wing.
