St. Paul to Background Check Tow Truck Drivers

The City of St. Paul is promising changes after a 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS investigation found drivers with questionable records towing cars for the city during snow emergencies last winter.

City officials said this year the St. Paul Police Department will conduct random background checks on tow truck drivers.

The investigation in February found some drivers without valid licenses and identified one driver with a conviction for auto theft.

The investigation also showed the city had no idea because it failed to compile a list of drivers as it was required to do.

City officials said that has changed and the city is better prepared to protect you can your car in a snow emergency.

The 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS investigation also pointed out the city paid towing firms a bonus when they towed more than 225 vehicles.

That has not changed, however now the bonus will be referred to as an "added payment."
