So, why is it that mom gets the "night before" jitters and the kids are fine before the first day of school? That's what happened at our house on Monday night. I was a wreck trying to think of everything I needed to send with them. There are forms, lunch money and so much to remember. Luckily, my husband is blissfully calm and balances out my nervousness. As I sit here and type, my kids are safely sitting in their classrooms listening to their teachers on the first day of school. I am the mother of a first and fourth grader. It seems like just yesterday I was changing diapers and walking in a stupor because of a lack of sleep. Now, my kids are venturing out into the world and becoming their own people. Today, my co-anchor Rebekah was saying goodbye to a kindergartener. Four years ago, I was in her shoes. I can see it in her eyes. The nostalgic look. The memories of a baby that suddenly grew up. I remember crying and feeling so lost without my little guy. Sure, I may still have a tear or two on the first day but there is also a cheer. I have given up my role as Chief Social Coordinator. The summer was fun but tiring at the same time as I entertained two active children. I yearn for those two hours after I get off work and before the kids get out of school to do something crazy like.....laundry....or grocery shop. Actually, I plan to catch up with friends and maybe schedule some lunches. I will also be pretty busy volunteering in my kids' classes. (It is my version of helping teachers and snooping on my kids at the same time!) Happy First Day of School to all of you parents! I hope you enjoyed that moment at the bus stop or taking that picture by their locker this morning. These are treasured times with treasured little people. |
