State Fair Grandstand Turns 100
Dan Patch was a grand horse and a century ago, the local world champion harness racer needed a grand stand for fans. So, the State Fair Grandstand was constructed.
The brick structure and bleachers offered 22,000 fans a seat.
Soon auto racing supplied the horse power.
Then thrill shows with crashing cars and clowns and high flying acrobats packed the stands.
And, in the 1960s it became a music venue. Singers like Johnny Cash, who sold out two nights, became headliners.
